A Mother’s Day Letter to My Younger Self (and to Every Solo Mum)

Dear Solo Mums,

This Mother’s Day, I’ve found myself reflecting. Not just on motherhood, but on the journey—where it all started, the unexpected turns, the growth, and the strength that came from it all.

I recently looked at a photo of myself at 17. Back then, I had no idea what was ahead. I became a mum at 19, then got married, had two more beautiful children, and by 33, I found myself navigating life as a solo mum. It was a whirlwind. A rollercoaster of highs, lows, tears, joy, and so much self-discovery.

And now, at 45, I can honestly say—I’m proud of the woman I’ve become.

If I could whisper something to that younger version of me, it would be this: There is so much waiting for you. So much light, so many opportunities. You will grow in ways you never imagined—and not just as a mum, but as you.

Because here’s what I’ve learned: no matter your age, your story isn’t done. Whether you’re 25 or 55, newly single or long into solo motherhood, just starting out or starting over, there is always room to grow.

“ What we plant today within ourselves will grow tomorrow”.

You are not too late. You are right on time.

I’ve found purpose, strength, and community through all of life's chaos. Being part of The Solo Mums Club has shown me how powerful it is when women support women—how healing, uplifting, and life-changing that can be. We don’t have to do it alone; we were never meant to.

So this Mother’s Day, I hope you celebrate yourself. Not just the mother you are, but the woman you’ve become—and the one you’re still becoming.

With love, admiration, and a wink to our younger selves,

Fiona
